Internet speed in PH improving, says DICT

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said internet speeds in the Philippines had improved over last year, citing crowdsourced data from Ookla.

For mobile internet speed, it said the Philippines ranked 86th globally in January 2021 versus 111th in the same period in 2020. Fixed internet was at 100th place globally or unchanged.

Comparing January this year with December 2020, mobile internet speed went up by 14.5 percent to 22.5 megabits per second (Mbps) while fixed broadband speed rose 4.1 percent to 31.44 Mbps, the DICT said.

“Our vision of digital transformation will be realized if all Filipinos, regardless of who they are and where they are in the country, have quality access to Internet connectivity services at affordable prices,” Information and Communications Secretary Gregorio Honasan II said in a statement.

The DICT and National Telecommunications Commission are conducting twice monthly meetings to check on the status of their network rollout plans and “to address any problems that may cause lags in its implementation.”

In 2020, the Philippine government took serious steps to address regulatory bottlenecks that have slowed the rollout of telco infrastructure.

모바일 인터넷 속도의 경우 2020년 같은 기간 동안 111위였던 것에 비해 2021년 1월 세계 86위로 올라섰다.

고정 라인을 이용한 인터넷 속도은 전세계적으로 100위 안에 안정적으로 순위권이다.

올해 1월과 작년 12월을 비교하더라도 모바일 인터넷 속도는 14.5% 증가한 22.5Mbps이며, 고정 광대역 속도는 4.1% 증가한 31.44Mbps를 기록했다.

필리핀 정보통신부 장관은 성명을 통해 "디지털 전환에 대한 우리의 비전은 모든 필리핀 국민이 어디에 있던지 관계없이 저렴한 가격으로 인터넷에 잘 연결될 수 있도록 실현하는 것"이라고 언급했다.

필리핀 정보통신기술부와 국가통신위원회는 네트워크 구축 계획 상태를 확인하고 발생할 수 있는 문제의 해결을 위해 매월 2번 회의를 진행하고 있다.

양대 통신사인 Globe와 PLDT는 앞서 올해 수 천개의 셀타워를 새롭게 건설하고 전례없는 속도로 광섬유 케이블을 설치하겠다고 발표한 바 있다.

신생 통신사인 Dito Telecommunity는 올 3월부터 상용서비스를 시작할 예정이다.
