'Economic workers' must be prioritized in vaccination, Cebu City Council says

The Cebu City Council wants economic workers included in the sectors that will be prioritized in the city’s vaccination program against COVID-19.

“It is crucial to include this group to the priority groups for COVID-19 vaccination because by protecting them, we are mitigating both the public health and economic impact of the pandemic,” reads the resolution by Councilor Alvin Dizon that the Council approved recently.

The lockdowns that were put in place at the height of the country’s battle against the coronavirus in 2020 have crippled economies and deprived many of jobs, and the City Council believes those who remain in the workforce must be among those inoculated first so that economic recovery can go full speed.

Among the priority sectors in the government’s vaccination program are frontline health workers and senior citizens.

세부 시의회는 코로나19 예방 접종 프로그램의 우선 순위를 지정하면서 경제 활동을 하는 근로자들을 포함시키기를 희망하고 있다.

경제활동을 하는 근로자 그룹을 우선 백신 대상자로 포함해야 이들을 보호하고 경제적 영향까지 모두 완화할 수 있을 것으로 여기기 때문이다.

작년 한 해 코로나 바이러스와의 전쟁이 절정에 달했을 때 시행된 락다운은 세부지역 경제를 마비시키고 많은 일자리를 잃게 했으며, 경제회복을 위해 엄청난 노력을 더해야 하게 되었다.

따라서 앞으로의 지역 경제 회복을 위해 노동력을 제공할 사람들이 먼저 예방접종을 받아야 한다는 것이 세부 시의회의 제안이다.

필리핀 정부가 제안한 예방접종 프로그램의 우선순위는 일선 의료계 종사자와 노인이다.
