Australia eyes stronger tourism ties with PH, plans direct flights to Cebu

If it meant giving a head start in the recovery of the two countries’ tourism industry, the Australian government expressed willingness to introduce another direct route to the Philippines.

And this time, it would be in Cebu.

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven Robinson, in a media briefing on Friday, January 29, said they are looking at opening direct flights between major cities in Australia and Cebu.

“Australians currently travel to Southeast Asia and generally go to Bali in Indonesia… But in actual fact, the Philippines offers as much, if not more, than traditional places that Australians have traveled to in Southeast Asia. And so, my vision is to get Australian airlines to fly in Cebu and then (have) Cebu as the gateway to travel to tourist destinations in the country,” said Robinson.

호주는 호주와 필리핀의 관광 산업 회복에 앞장서기 위해 세부와의 직항 노선을 타진하고 있다.

스티븐 로빈슨 필리핀 주재 호주 대사는 29일 금요일 언론 브리핑을 통해 호주와 세부의 주요 도시간 직항편 개통을 검토 중이라고 밝혔다.

호주 사람들은 동남아 여행을 일반적으로 인도네시아 발리로 많이 가는데, 필리핀에서는 세부가 필리핀을 여행하는 호주 사람들을 위한 관문이 될 것이라고 로빈슨 대사는 말했다.

로빈슨 대사는 또한 호주 역시 코로나19 때문에 크게 타격을 입은 관광 산업에 의존하는 국가 중의 하나라고 언급했다.

그러나 유행병을 극복하고 나면 기회는 더 엄청날 것이라고 그는 말했다.

그는 호주 사람들이 세부로 날아와 세부 지역의 리조트에 머물면서 필리핀 관광을 시작할 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다고 덧붙였다.
